  • organic cleanser
    Lemon Cleanser
    Eminence
    $38.00

    Size: 8.4 fl oz

    Who It's For

Good for most skin types, especially dry or sensitive skin. Not great for oily skin or citrus allergies.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

Organic. I use this organic cleanser as part of my own daily regimen. It cleans well but without stripping off natural oils. Like many Eminence products, it has a subtle fragrance that's not overpowering or too long lasting.  A creamy base.

    How to Use

Apply to damp skin and massage gently once or twice a day.

    Ingredients

Lemon, Lemon Grass Tea, Corn Germ (Zea Mays) Oil, Bioflavonoids, Natural Cream Base, Calendula Oil, Glycerine, Natural Moisturizing, Factor, Biocomplex (Vitamin A, Esther C Vitamin E Coenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid), Lemon Oil, Balm Mint Oil, Glycine Derivative, Xanthan Gum

    Phloretin CF Gel
    SkinCeuticals
    $165.00

    Size: 1 fl. oz

    Who It's For

All but sensitive skin.  If you are sensitive, try this in a small amount for a few days on a test area.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

SkinCeuticals made its name originally by making the best antioxidants, and this one is no exception. 3 antioxidants in one, it contains L-ascorbic acid 10%, phloretin 2%, and ferulic acid 0.5%. My personal antioxidant under my sunscreen. The same high quality without the glass jars - love the new closed pump with its travel-friendly packaging. Oxidizes only minimally with time (turns slightly yellow).

    How to Use

Apply after cleansing and under your moisturizer and/or sunscreen.

    Ingredients

    2% Phloretin, 10% L-Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C), 0.5% Ferulic Acid

  • Rich hydrating eye cream
    Lumiere Riche Bio-Restorative Eye Balm
    NeoCutis
    $108.00

    Size: 0.5 oz

    Who It's For

Ideal for those with wrinkles and sun damage on the eyelids and around the eye area.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

This product is great and supported by a study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology. It contains PSP which stimulates cell activity and growth. If you like science, it is a mixture of human growth factors, cytokines and interleukins.  PSP is similar to the TNS product (see antiaging in this shop) that so many people love.   Also contains a form of hyaluronic acid which hydrates and a yam extract which plumps the thin skin around the eyes.

    How to Use

Apply morning and night to the eyelids down to the cheek margin and include the wrinkles ("crow's feet").

    Ingredients

Water (Aqua), C12-20 Acid PEG-8 Ester, Petrolatum, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Glycerin, Saccharide Isomerate, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate / Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Isohexadecane, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Root Extract, Bisabolol, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, Caffeine, Processed Skin Proteins (PSP™), Disodium EDTA, Phospholipids, Glycyrrhetinic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Acrylates / C10-30 Alkylacrylate, Crosspolymer, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Hydroxide, Tocopherol, Beech Tree Bud Extract (Fagus Sylvatica Extract), Palm Oil (Elaeis Guineensis), Tocotrienols, Squalene, Phytosterols, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Polysorbate 60, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzoic Acid

  • High Zinc Sunscreen Non-Tinted
ZinClear SPF 30 Non-tinted (now called SheerZinc)
    DermaQuest
    $51.50

    Size: 2 fl. oz

    Who It's For

Great daily sunscreen (not for sports, water etc.) for those who want the extra zinc especially for melasma or other pigment problem.  Works well for all but the darkest skin types - could be a little chalky here but you can put makeup over it.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

Still one of my favorites. Note that this is now called SheerZinc.  New name, but the same excellent product.  No other sunscreen has 18% zinc and goes on this well that I’ve ever seen. This is the clear, non-tinted version which goes on fairly white but absorbs quite well after several minutes.  Scroll down to see the tinted version which many like better.

Great for melasma and anyone with pigment problems due to the 18% zinc. This is a physical (mineral) sunscreen, meaning that it contains no sunscreen chemicals. Excellent also for sensitive skin. Expensive, but worth it for the extra protection.

    How to Use

Apply sunblock in the morning and reapply every 2-3 hours if sweating or outdoors.

    Ingredients

Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide 18.60%, Inactive Ingredients: Water, Cyclomethicone, Glycerine, Glyceryl Stearate and PEG 100 Stearate, Sorbitol, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbitan Stearate, Lecithin, Arabidopsis Extract, Plankton Extract, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA

  • Retinol for Wrinkles and Skin Care
    Retinol Complex .25
    SkinMedica
    $62.00

    Size: 1 oz

    Who It's For

For sun-damaged skin and for those wanting to prevent the appearance of wrinkles and aging.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

This is SkinMedica's updated version of the old Tri-Retinol Complex, and it is still an excellent over-the-counter retinol.  At this percentage, the effects are similar to Renova/tretinoin, etc. Use at night. If you can use the prescription version of tretinoin (like Renova), do so - but many people don’t want to be bothered with a prescription and the two retinols listed on this site are almost as good. This retinol also has vitamin E in a base that will not clog pores and is still compatible with moisturizers and sunscreens. Also see the Neocutis Nouvelle+Retinol Correction Cream.  Start with this one though if you have never used a retinoid before.

Retinoids are repair creams that have 20 years of science and experience behind them. They build collagen and normalize sun damaged keratinocytes (skin cells) and help to prevent precancerous growths and skin cancers if used regularly.

    How to Use

Apply one pump to the face at night. Always use at night - light inactivates it. Begin using twice per week, then increase gradually.  If this product irritates your skin a little, try applying your moisturizer first, then wait 10-20 minutes, then apply this. You must use a sunscreen every morning if you use a retinoid because your skin will be just slightly more sun sensitive.  Stop this product a week before sunny vacations and consider not using it if you can't be consistent with sunscreen or truly are outdoors constantly.

    Ingredients

Water/Aqua/Eau, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Niacinamide, Polyacrylate-13, Squalane, Retinol, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-8, Dunaliella Salina Extract, Magnolia Grandiflora Bark Extract, Tocopherol, Tocotrienols, Ceramide 3, Bisabolol, Phytosterols, Squalene, Tocopheryl Acetate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Wax (Oryza Sativa Cera), Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Polysorbate 20, Butylene Glycol, Cetyl Palmitate, Laureth-23, Trideceth-6 Phosphate, Sodium Hydroxide, Dicaprylyl Ether, Lauryl Alcohol, Polyisobutene, Dextran, Potassium Sorbate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin

  • organic moisturizer for aging skin
    Blueberry Soy Night Recovery Cream
    Eminence
    $64.00

    Size: 2 fl oz

    Who It's For

Mostly for dry, 40+ or estrogen-challenged skin

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

Organic. This rich moisturizer contains blueberry extract as an antioxidant and soy which has some estrogenic effects (helps plump the skin). Great for extremely dry skin. Smells wonderful and a very nice consistency.  You don't need much and it's a very popular gift.

    How to Use

Apply once or twice daily.   You can thin it a little with water in your palm to make it a lighter consistency or if travelling to a more humid climate.   I love this on airplanes to rehydrate hands and face and put it in a small container in my flight bag.  It doesn't have a lot of preservatives, so if you haven't used it in 3 months after opening, throw it out.

    Ingredients

Blueberry Juice, Blueberry Pulp, Corn Germ Oil, Cetearyl Glucoside, Shea Butter, Soy Yogurt, Raspberry Juice, Bramble Juice, Glyceryl Stearate, Grape Seed Oil, Calendula Oil, Glycerin (Vegetable Based), Xanthan Gum, Biocomplex (Vitamins A-C-E, Coenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid), Evening Primrose Oil, Glycine Derivative, Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid

    Size: 2 oz

    Who It's For

Everyone interested in preserving the skin on their neck, chest and hands.  Not irritating but be careful if you have sensitive skin - try a small area at first.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

Finally a good product for the neck, chest and hands.  Does seem to improve color and texture overall but don't expect change in deeper wrinkles or raised brown spots. You need your dermatologist for those.

    How to Use

Every morning under sunscreen and every evening under moisturizer on the neck, chest, and hands.

    Ingredients

Water, Cyclohexasiloxane, Glycerin, Sodium Tetrahydrojasmonate, Butylene Glycol, Alcohol Denat., Limnanthes Alba Seed Oil / Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Dipropylene Glycol, Polysilicone-11, Dimethicone, Bis-peg/ppg-16/16 Peg/ppg-16/16 Dimethicone, Ammonium Polyacryldimethyltauramide / Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Hydroxyphenoxy Propionic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Hydroxide, Salicylic Acid, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil / Sunflower Seed Oil, Caprylic/capric Triglyceride, Dimethiconol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Vigna Aconitifolia / Vigna Aconitifolia Seed Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Argilla / Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Disodium Edta, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil / Rosemary Leaf Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Lavandula Hybrida Oil, Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract / Cucumber Fruit Extract, Linalool, Citronellol, Curcuma Longa Extract / Turmeric Root Extract, Sclareolide, Rosa Spp / Rose Flower Oil, Jasminum Officinale Extract / Jasmine Extract, Citric Acid.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

Finally there is a plant based alternative that works almost as well as the hydroquinones which are available by prescription. For those those with melasma, or a lot of sun damage, there may not be a "cure," but it's nice to have a reasonable alternative to the hydroquinone.  You can use this product year around, or use it when you are taking a break from prescription hydroquinone.

If you have pigment problems, you must wear  an 18-20% zinc containing sunscreen every day, and wear a brimmed hat whenever outdoors!

    Key Ingredients:

Transexamic Acid Helps correct the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Phenylethyl Resorcinol Helps support melanin balance to correct the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Niacinamide & Tetrapeptide-30 Helps prevent the appearance of new spots while visibly balancing the appearance of your skin tone.

Marine Extract Blend Helps to correct and prevent the appearance of hyperpigmentation while supporting a healthy skin barrier.

Phytic Acid Enhances skin texture and promotes even-looking skin.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

An antioxidant, this is a non irritating Vitamin C lotion that's still light.  With the Vitamin C (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate) as the second ingredient, it has enough concentration of the active to make it effective.  Great for sensitive or easily irritated skin, but also great for those with dry skin.  Use it under your sunscreen in the morning.

    Ingredients

Water (Aqua),Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Hexyl Laurate, Sorbitol, Butylene Glycol, Stearic Acid, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Sorbitan Stearate, Polysorbate 60, Dimethicone, Squalane, PPG-12/SMDI Copolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Linoleic Acid, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Sterols, Phospholipids, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Callus Culture Extract, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Alcohol, Ectoin , Lecithin, Cyclotetrapeptide-24 Aminocyclohexane Carboxylate, Di-PPG-2 Myreth-10 Adipate, Glucosamine HCl, Algae Extract, Yeast Extract, Urea, Micrococcus Lysate, Plankton Extract, Arabidopsis Thaliana Extract, Retinol, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil.

Prevention + Daily Moisturizer SPF 30
    Image
    $39.00

    Size:  3.2 oz.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

This sunscreen has been very popular. Very moisturizing and great for normal to dry skin. It absorbs in well!  Make-up goes over it easily. Since untinted you can use on the face, neck, chest.....really anywhere.  Tube is 3.2 oz and lasts well.

This is one of the highest zinc sunscreens on the market that is still priced well and has the zinc 18%. Zinc is the best UVA plus UVB blocker in a sunscreen.

One of the best sunscreens for melasma due to it's zinc 18%.  If you want a zinc 18% sunscreen with a tint, look at the Dermaquest 30 tinted.

Note: We stopped carrying the Image SPF 50 because it had less zinc (9.0%) which was confusing patients. The SPF 50 has more chemicals.

Can be chalky on darker skin tones.  Try the tinted version instead.

    Ingredients

    Active Ingredients: zinc oxide 18%.

Key Ingredients: aloe (vera) barbadensis leaf juice,  tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate,  camelia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, arabidopsis thaliana, micrococcus lysate, l-ergothioneine, lecithin.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

Safflower seed oil, marine collagen (algae), and Vitamin E.  Feels rich but easy to blend into the skin.  Similar to La Mer in hydrating ability, but at a better price point. Not greasy, with a light, natural fragrance. Very moisturizing and good on irritated or sensitive skin.

    How to Use

At least once or twice daily. Or at night with a lighter cream during the day.   Should last several months with daily use.  You don't need much.

    $133.00

    Size:  1.7 oz

    Who It's For

Everyone with a neck that's aging.

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

This is one of the best performing neck creams we've tested and is popular with our patients. It improves the fine lines and some of the laxity (sagging), if it's mild.  If you have a LOT of loose skin, this will help with texture, but not the sagging. Contains a high concentration (see the 3rd ingredient) of an extract from a red microalgae (porphyridium), peptides and green tea extract. It's not oily but moisturizing. Antioxidant with potentially anti-inflammatory properties.

    How to Use

Use under your sunscreen on your neck in the AM and under moisturizer at night.

Timeless Repair Cream with caviar extracts
    Pevonia
    $205.00

    Size: 1.7 oz

    Who It's For

    Normal to dry skin

    Dr. Irwin's Product Review

For normal to dry skin.  Great under makeup. Caviar extract contains 40 minerals and vitamins.  I honestly have no idea which of those 40 minerals and vitamins are really the "actives," but I have to say this product performs well. They also make a caviar serum that we don't carry yet, that can be used under the cream.  Has a light, unisex fragrance that doesn't compete with after shave or perfume. Moisturizing but a slightly lighter formulation than the Marine Collagen Cream.

    How to Use

    Once or twice daily

    Ingredients

Water (Aqua), Squalane, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Caviar Extract, Cetearyl Glucoside, Hydrolyzed Hibiscus Esculentus Extract, Dextrin, Algae Oligosaccharides, Sorbitol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Thioctic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate (Vit. SkinTour's Philosophy:
Skincare is your best
investment
One of the best investments in your skin is your daily skincare. Why? Because you can prevent many problems with blotchy skin color, lack of glow, texture, some types of acne, and fine lines with good skincare products. You can also correct some of these problems with effective skincare products. Great skincare is often more expensive because quality ingredients are expensive. Some companies spend on research/development which benefits all of us and adds to the cost. Are they worth it? In general - yes!
